VHCB AmeriCorps is seeking a TAM Trails Steward to maintain and expand the Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) and connect it to regional networks in Vermont. You will repair tread, install signage, lead volunteers, and develop outreach materials to tell MALT’s story to the public.

The role offers full-time AmeriCorps service with living allowance and education award, plus health coverage and training opportunities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to coordinate volunteer groups and lead trail workdays.
• Comfort with field notes, GPS, and photo records for trail monitoring.
• Willingness to participate in trainings and program initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Perform trail maintenance and stewardship on TAM and related networks (clear brush, repair tread, improve signage).
• Conduct trail condition monitoring and documentation using field notes, GPS, and photos.
• Assist with trail planning and connectivity efforts.
• Support volunteer recruitment, coordination, and supervision for workdays and stewardship events.
• Assist with public outreach related to trails through newsletters, trail updates, event promotions.
• Support trail-related events and community engagement activities.
• Participate in all VHCB AmeriCorps trainings, service days, events, and program initiatives.
• Engage in professional and personal development activities and networking opportunities.

Job description

Play a vital role in maintaining, improving, and expanding Middlebury Area Land Trust's (MALT) 19-mile Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) and its connections to the North Country National Scenic Trail and surrounding community networks. Spend your days repairing trail tread, constructing bridges, installing signage, and leading volunteers in the important service that keeps our trail system accessible! You’ll also develop outreach materials to share MALT’s story with the public. Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) is a community-based conservation organization based in Middlebury, Vermont. As an “Area” land trust, MALT’s regional service area encompasses all of Addison county. MALT protects and stewards over 3,500 acres of conserved lands and manages more than 30 miles of trails, including the Trail Around Middlebury (TAM). Our organization's mission is to connect our community with the lands we protect through conservation, recreation, and education. This position is part of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board AmeriCorps (VHCB AmeriCorps). The VHCB AmeriCorps program supports the innovative dual-goal approach to creating stable affordable housing opportunities for Vermont residents while preserving the natural and working landscape. This position is Full Time: Requires 1,720 hours for an average of 40 hours per week for 47 weeks. Member will receive a living allowance of $31,000 (pre-tax) and an education award of $7,395 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of service. Other benefits include health insurance, federal school loan forbearance, and various training and networking opportunities.
