We have been active in the North American, Australian and the Middle East markets since 2013 and have successfully delivered more than 150 consultancy contracts for government, public and privately owned organizations.

Through our consulting services in the United States (US), we are assisting both public agencies and private clients in the transportation sector to accelerate transformation efforts, make step-changes in major program delivery, and achieve leaps forward in areas such as asset management & maintenance, major projects, railway operations, strategic planning and advisory.

Our work is driven forward by our values: agile, always safe, care about people, collaborative, impartial and passionate.

The opportunity with NRC

Building on our continued success, we are looking for an experienced rail professional to join our team as a Systems Modelling Subject Matter Expert in New York.

You will provide support to the client as a System Simulation Subject Matter Expert for a complex Modernization Program.

Key Accountabilities

  • Determine critical performance parameters for system design and operations.
  • Analyze performance improvements expected from CBTC modernization, including safety, reliability, and operating efficiency gains.
  • Configure simulation scenarios for normal service, degraded modes, turnback operations, temporary speed restrictions, dwell variability, and incident scenarios.
  • Support the development of subsystem‑level or real‑time simulation models to validate logic and performance.
  • Evaluate performance impacts of system design choices such as block design, communication latencies, braking model assumptions, and operational strategies.
  • Contribute to the development, review, and refinement of performance‑related requirements
  • Review proposed solutions from vendors and validate against requirements for specified headway, capacity, and operational performance metrics.
  • Support multi‑vendor interoperability modeling for lines where CBTC suppliers must coexist under a client interoperability and interface framework.
  • Analyze operational data (e.g., run times, dwell patterns, system logs) to support simulation assumptions and client needs.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and recommend improvements in operating parameters, signaling logic, or equipment configurations.
  • Produce scenario analyses to support capital investment decisions or operational changes (e.g., new service patterns, increased frequencies).
  • Evaluate alternative operating strategies to enhance performance, resiliency, or capacity.
  • Present performance findings to the client, engineering consultants, and CBTC vendors.
  • Participate in technical working groups, and other meetings.
  • Support system procurement activities and the development of project requirements and design criteria.

Experience, skills, knowledge and competencies

  • A bachelor's or master’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Transportation Systems, or related field. In lieu of a master’s or advanced degree in System Engineering, or related field;
  • Experience in rail systems simulation, operations modeling, systems engineering, or train control performance analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze simulation models.
  • Experience in capacity planning.
  • Understanding of CBTC concepts such as moving‑block signaling, braking models, headway calculations, stringline charts, subsystem interactions, and subsystem relationships.
  • Experience supporting CBTC training simulators or operational readiness testing.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical modeling skills.
  • Systems thinking and ability to perform subsystem interaction analysis.
  • Ability to translate operational needs into performance models.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work across engineering, operations, vendor, and program teams.
  • Familiarity with how subsystem logic influences performance outcomes such as throughput and system responsiveness.
  • Ability to assess run-times, dwell variability, delays, speed‑restriction impacts, and system logs to identify performance gaps.

For the right person, this role presents a fantastic opportunity to develop their career, joining an established and passionate team, with ambitious plans to grow.
