Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking a Fault Management Systems Engineer to advance the autonomy and safety of lunar and spaceflight systems within the Lunar Permanence program. You will design fault detection and recovery, work with subsystems, safety, and operations teams, and help translate analyses into autonomous behaviors used in flight software.

The role emphasizes collaboration, rigorous analysis, and clear communication in a fast-paced environment to support crewed and uncrewed missions.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in a technical field related to aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or computer science.
  • MS degree preferred in related aerospace or systems disciplines.
  • Experience with safety-critical systems and fault protection.

Responsibilities

  • Design autonomous fault detection, isolation, and recovery mechanisms for spaceflight systems.
  • Decompose failure modes and model hazard analyses into system autonomy requirements.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to develop fault protection and integrate into flight software.

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

In this role you will work as a Fault Management Systems Engineer, developing system-level fault protection behaviors and leading subsystem teams in the integration of lower-level fault protection. You will be a key technical voice at the interface of subsystems, safety, and operations teams to ensure the safety and reliability of crewed and uncrewed lunar missions.

Responsibilities
  • Designing autonomous Fault Detection Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) mechanisms, including fault protection state machines, monitors, and responses
  • Decomposing failure modes, effects, and criticality analyses (FMECA), fault tree analyses (FTA), and hazard analyses into the required system autonomy
  • Defining and modeling vehicle states, modes, conditions, activities, and functions
  • Leading cross-functional working groups with subsystem engineers to develop and integrate the required fault protection mechanisms
  • Supporting implementation of autonomous behaviors in flight software
  • Supporting the broader lunar program in the development of system of system models and timelines
  • Supporting systems safety work, as required
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, or related technical subject area
  • Highly knowledgeable of systems engineering practices, integration processes, and mission/safety critical systems
  • Strong ability and desire to analyze complex systems and deliver solutions to results-oriented problems
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful candidates typically have5+ years of relevant experience
  • M.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Systems, Software, Electrical, or related technical subject area
  • Demonstrated experience developing fault protection, FDIR, or autonomous response behaviors for spacecraft, launch vehicles, aircraft, or comparable complex systems
  • Technical knowledge in multiple subsystems, particularly guidance navigation & control, and flight software
  • Experience with full spacecraft design life cycle
  • Experience working on large complex programs with multiple partners
  • Experience with requirements definition and management, preferably using Jama
  • Experience with software tools such as Git, Jama, Cameo, Confluence, and JIRA
Base Pay Range for WA applicants

Base Pay Range for: WA applicants is $121,023.00 - $169,432.20

Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
