Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished,independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. TheLaw School is searching for a Systems and Emerging TechnologiesLibrarian to join our team. Reporting to Director of the Library, the Systems and EmergingTechnologies Librarian is responsible for the management,configuration, and maintenance of the Library’s systems, hardware,software, web services, and applications. In collaboration with theAcquisitions Librarian, the Systems and Emerging TechnologiesLibrarian oversees the planning, evaluation, implementation andlifecycle of the Library’s electronic resources and authenticationplatform. The Librarian evaluates, recommends, configures, andprovides support and training for new and emerging technologiessupported by the Library.
Responsibilitiesinclude:
- Library Systems Administration: Oversees theadministration, configuration, and maintenance of key librarysystems, including Koha (integrated library system), EBSCODiscovery Service, OpenAthens authentication, LibApps, and othertools. Investigates and implements digital accessibility standardsand best practices for all library supported content. Responsiblefor managing backend settings, system integrations, and technicalinfrastructure to ensure reliable access, system interoperability,and alignment with institutional IT standards. Troubleshootssystem-level issues and collaborates with vendors, IT staff, andlibrary colleagues to support optimal system performance and useraccess.
- Library Technology Administration: Manages full range oflibrary technology that supports public services, research,instruction and internal operations. Oversees access to digitaltools, platforms, and systems that support library workflows andenhance user experience, including digital accessibility standards.Evaluates and implements new tools, ensures existing technologiesare optimized and up to date, and resolves technical issues relatedto hardware, software, and digital platforms. Develops policies,workflows, and documentation to support the use and management oflibrary technology. Provides training and support for staff,faculty, and students to ensure successful adoption and use oflibrary-supported tools. Coordinates and tracks spending for budgetlines related to the maintenance, supply and management of Librarysupported hardware and software.
- Technology Planning and Implementation: Investigates,implements, and supports new and emerging library technologies toimprove service delivery, resource access, and user experience.Develops and documents technology policies, procedures, andworkflows in coordination with library staff and campus IT.
- Data Collection and Analysis: Collaborates with theAcquisitions Librarian and Assistant Librarian for Public Servicesas necessary to collect and analyze systems usage data to supportresource evaluation, allocation, metadata improvements, and gapanalysis. Provides regular reports to inform library planning anddecision-making.
- Instructional Technology and Training: Assists withinvestigating, implementing, and supporting library-supportededucational technologies used in legal research instruction andrelated services. Develops instructional documentation and trainingmaterials to support effective use of these tools. Creates andmaintains internal policies and procedures related to the adoptionand management of educational technology supported by thelibrary.
- Collaboration and Vendor Relations: Collaborates withthe Library Director, library colleagues, campus IT, and vendors tomaintain the library’s systems and technology infrastructure.Coordinates communication and resolution of technical issues acrossplatforms and service providers. Coordinates vendor training andeducational resources for library staff.
- Digital Collections Management: Manages the library’sin-house digital collections and oversees the institutionalrepository, optimizing findability and maintaining long-term accessand preservation strategies. Supervises and trains library staffresponsible for IR content uploads and digital exhibitcreation.
- Reference Services: Provide general reference servicesboth in-person and virtually, including office hours and one-on-oneresearch consultations. Assist patrons with a wide range ofinquiries from basic bibliographic questions to complex legalresearch.
- Instruction & Programming:Participate in legalresearch and library instruction and programming.
- Professional Development: Participates in local andnational professional associations. Engages in ongoing professionaldevelopment to remain current in library technology, computing,librarianship, and higher education trends.
Required:
- M.L.S. or equivalent from an ALA accredited libraryschool.
- Demonstrated expertise and aptitude for learning technologyrelated to job duties.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and oralcommunication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently andcollaboratively.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals andgroups within an academic community.
- Knowledge of legal electronic information resources.
- Interest in and commitment to emerging library practices andtechnologies.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-makingskills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and remain flexible ina dynamic environment.
- Commitment to providing responsive, user-centered service in alegal academic setting.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience, however, experience can besubstituted with relevant education.
Preferred:
- ABA accredited JD (or equivalent foreign degree)
- Degree in computer science, information design, networktechnology or equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with Koha or other integrated librarysystems.
- Familiarity with cataloging and metadata standards fore-resources.
- Familiarity with legal electronic information resources andresearch platforms.
- Proficiency with web design and familiarity with web standardsand usability practices.
- Experience teaching or training people to use legal researchtools.
- Experience providing reference and instructional services in alaw library setting.
Remote capabilities:
- This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule.
