Job summary

University of Chicago’s Department PSD Computer Science Tech Administration seeks a Systems Administrator 3 to design, operate, and secure all computing infrastructure, with a strong HPC focus. You will own complex systems, lead projects, and collaborate with faculty, researchers, and staff to enable instructional and research workflows.

You will administer Linux systems in production, manage multi-tier architectures, and ensure high performance, reliability, and security across servers,

Qualifications

• College or university degree in a related field.
• 5–7 years of related work experience.
• Experience with Linux systems in production environments.
• Experience with multi-tier or cluster architectures.
• Experience with web servers (Apache/Nginx).
• Knowledge of backup technologies and monitoring/automation.
• Strong config mgmt skills (Puppet/Ansible).
• Understanding TCP/IP including subnetting, VLANs, IP addressing.
• Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, Nomad).
• Proficiency in Python, Ruby, Bash scripting.
• Networking concepts: routing, switching, troubleshooting.
• Experience with switches and network firewalls.

Responsibilities

• Lead system and network administration with hardware, OS, and network interaction.
• Configure, install, upgrade, and maintain server applications and hardware.
• Ensure security and backup procedures across systems and storage.
• Plan patches, upgrades, and maintenance for servers and subsystems.
• Monitor system health, performance, and capacity; analyze logs.
• Collaborate with faculty and researchers to deliver technical solutions.
• Support procurement and purchasing for research/instructional needs.
• Lead large infrastructure projects and migrations.
• Document work and share best practices with team.
