Job summary

nLIGHT-DEFENSE Systems, Inc. seeks a System Safety Engineer to lead safety activities for HEL and Beam Control systems across the product lifecycle.

You will identify hazards, assess risks, develop safety requirements, and ensure compliance with MIL-STD-882E and customer-specific safety standards. The role involves cross-disciplinary collaboration with systems, software, firmware, electrical, mechanical, and test engineering teams, plus supporting DoD acquisition milestones and safety

Qualifications

• 3+ years in system safety or systems engineering in aerospace/defense
• Experience with MIL-STD-882E throughout product lifecycle
• Ability to develop and maintain system safety documentation

Responsibilities

• Develop, execute, and maintain a System Safety Program per MIL-STD-882E
• Conduct hazard analyses (PHA, SSHA, SHA, OSHA, HHA)
• Identify hazards and assess risks with mitigation planning
• Maintain Hazard Tracking System and ensure timely closure of safety actions
• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to allocate and implement safety requirements
• Support development and integration of safety artifacts for DoD reviews
• Produce SSPPs, Hazard Reports, SARs, and Safety Verification Reports in lifecycle stages
