Job summary

Focused Energy in Austin seeks a Senior Systems Safety Engineer to partner with engineering and operations as we advance the TTE project, laser program, and readiness. This embedded safety role works with engineering teams to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and develop mitigation strategies during design, installation, validation and operation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
• 5+ years in systems safety or engineering safety in high-risk environments.
• Proven experience performing structured hazard analyses and turning findings into engineering controls.
• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams in fast-moving R&D / manufacturing contexts.
• Strong written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Act as the engineering safety partner for the Austin site across design, installation, and operation.
• Lead hazard analyses (HAZID, FMEA, JHA) for laser systems, electrical, cryogenic, and related subsystems.
• Translate hazard findings into design requirements, interlocks, and operating controls.
• Provide hands-on safety support during installation, validation, and commissioning activities.
• Develop safe operating envelopes, startup/shutdown strategies, and permits.
• Define corrective actions and engineering controls with cross-functional teams.
• Maintain risk assessments and engineering safety documentation for project execution.
• Coordinate with central safety leadership to align standards across sites.
• Investigate incidents/near-misses and implement preventive actions.
• Deliver technical safety guidance and project-specific safety training.
