Job summary

nLIGHT-DEFENSE Systems, Inc. in Longmont, CO seeks a System Safety Engineer to lead safety activities for HEL and beam control systems. You will integrate safety into architecture, design, and verification while supporting MIL-STD-882E compliance and DoD milestones.

Requires 3+ years in system safety or systems engineering, a DoD security posture, and strong technical writing. Onsite role with competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in system safety engineering, systems engineering, or related discipline.
• Working knowledge of MIL-STD-882E and safety principles across the lifecycle.
• Experience conducting hazard analyses and risk mitigation for complex systems.
• Ability to interpret military/government safety standards and apply them.
• Experience developing hazard tracking systems and safety risk docs.
• Strong technical writing for safety documents and reviews.

Responsibilities

• Develop, execute, and maintain a System Safety Program per MIL-STD-882E.
• Perform hazard analyses: PHA, SSHA, SHA, OSHA, HHA.
• Identify hazards and track risk with mitigation planning.
• Develop Hazard Tracking System documentation and close safety actions.
• Collaborate across engineering disciplines to allocate safety requirements.
• Support safety requirements development, traceability, verification, and validation.
• Conduct safety assessments of architectures and interfaces.
• Create SSPPs, Hazard Reports, SARs, and Safety Verification Reports.
• Support DoD reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR) with safety artifacts.
• Participate in design reviews and advise on risk acceptance and compliance.
• Provide system safety guidance across programs and customers.
• Help standardize safety processes and best practices within the org.
• Support customer interactions, audits, and safety reviews.
