Job summary

Focused Energy LLC in Austin, TX, seeks a Senior Systems Safety Engineer to act as the engineering safety partner for the TTE and laser projects, ensuring risk is identified and mitigated throughout design, installation, validation, commissioning, and operation.

You will work with engineering and operations teams, lead formal hazard analyses, translate findings into interlocks and procedures, and coordinate with central safety leadership to maintain consistent standards across sites and projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field; advanced degree is a plus.
• 5+ years in a systems safety, engineering safety, or closely related role in a high-risk or highly regulated environment.
• Experience performing structured hazard analyses and translating findings into engineering/operational controls.
• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams in fast-moving R&D, prototype, or advanced manufacturing environments.
• Strong knowledge of low-voltage electrical, mechanical, laser, cryogenic, or process hazards.

Responsibilities

• Act as the engineering safety partner for the Austin site across design, installation, validation, commissioning, and operation.
• Lead hazard analyses (HAZID, FMEA, JHA, what-if) for laser, electrical, cryogenic, and mechanical systems.
• Review designs to ensure safety requirements and interlocks are integrated early.
• Provide hands-on safety support during installation and commissioning activities.
• Develop safe operating envelopes, risk mitigations, and work instructions.
• Document risk assessments, safety reviews, and operational constraints.
• Coordinate with Germany-led safety leadership for alignment and escalation.
• Participate in investigations of incidents and near misses to drive corrective actions.
