Role
The Systems Engineer I designs, architects, and implements complex hardware deployments, software installations/upgrades, and significant operational initiatives. These include highly available web services, Storage Area Networks, SQL databases, Microsoft Active Directory Infrastructure, messaging systems, and other application services.
Essential Functions
Reporting directly to the Supervisor of IT Infrastructure and Security, the Systems Engineer I performs the following duties:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of data center staff and resources, including scheduling upgrades and maintenance with minimal impact on core business and instructional functions. This includes performing off-hour upgrades, installing patches, troubleshooting, etc.
- Perform project management responsibilities such as budgeting, RFP development, and Disaster Recovery planning.
- Handle incident, change management, and problem resolution across multiple tiers.
- Design and implement secure IT infrastructure, including scalable web services, Storage Area Networks, internet/intranet services, SQL databases, server virtualization, messaging systems, Active Directory, File Print, and other servers and services.
- Maintain Public Key Infrastructure and ensure compliance with information systems security standards through routine audits and vulnerability assessments.
- Monitor system faults, performance, and capacity issues; prepare remediation reports and documentation.
- Proactively research and resolve trends of utilization or errors.
- Develop and implement applications and scripts to automate operational tasks such as disaster recovery, backups, reporting, and account management.
- Identify opportunities for process and quality improvements and implement applicable technologies or process changes.
- Architect and test highly available infrastructure components including clustered/fail-over services, fault tolerance, disaster recovery, and load balancing.
- Implement systems management and proactive monitoring tools.
- Perform performance tuning, backup, restore, and maintenance of enterprise SQL databases.
- Oversee large backup systems using OST, NDMP, data deduplication, replication, and snapshots. Schedule and maintain backups, review logs, and develop recovery procedures.
- Document all system administration processes and installation procedures.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with new technologies and certifications.
Other Functions
- Manage software/hardware maintenance contracts and network service agreements.
- Oversee purchasing of Information Systems infrastructure.
- Perform other duties as required and as assigned by the Supervisor of IT Infrastructure and Security.
Minimum Qualifications
- Microsoft MCSE/MCITP, VMWare VCP, or BS degree in computer or information technology.
- At least four (4) years’ experience supporting large-scale network infrastructure, including backup, restore, virus protection, patching, and administering Microsoft Server and Active Directory.
- Experience with Storage Area Networks or NAS, scripting (VBS or PowerShell), and administering Microsoft Exchange, server virtualization (VMWare, Hyper-V), SQL, or SAN technologies.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet, ACLs, VLANs, DHCP, DNS, SNMP, SMTP, iSCSI, and related protocols.
- Ability to work off-hours as needed and demonstrate independence and effectiveness in completing work.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an IT-related field.
- Experience with virtualization architecture, application design, programming languages, Microsoft SCCM, SQL clustering, and high-availability systems.
- Experience in a K-12 educational setting and familiarity with FCPS policies and programs.
