Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position is responsible for performing skilled work in the construction and maintenance of the district’s facilities and equipment.

REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Maintenance Trades

SALARY SCHEDULE: 105

WORK DAYS: 250

REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience
  • High School diploma, or equivalent. OR Diploma from an accredited vocational institution or approved professional certification training program.
  • Four (4) years of experience in maintenance, repair, or construction trade work or its equivalent; with at least two (2) years in the specific trade of assignment (carpentry, painting, electrical, etc.).
  • OR Five (5) years of experience in a specific maintenance, repair, or construction trade at the journeyman (skilled) level.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred
  • Technical or vocational courses in one or more trades
Licenses, Certifications, and other Requirements
  • Possess a valid Class C driver’s license.
Preferred
  • Possess a valid Class B, CDL driver’s license.
  • Possess State License in the following: Electrical, Plumbing, and/or HVAC.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrable knowledge of state, county, and city building codes and ordinances.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of tools, materials, and standard practices of building and/or equipment maintenance trades.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of types and qualities of various equipment and their adaptability and use in specific situations.
  • Communication skills, including clarity, tact, courtesy, and calm during stressful situations.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment of maintenance and construction trades.
  • Ability to work from sketches, drawings and blueprints.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written communications.
  • Ability to work with principals, administrators, and other school personnel.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs the necessary tasks of the assigned trade (carpentry, painting, electrical, and so on).
  • Performs other maintenance, repair, or construction tasks to buildings, other district property or structures, and equipment as necessary.
  • Assigns and monitors the work of other maintenance staff assigned to the same project.
  • Coordinates staffing for the projects with the Lead Mechanic and Supervisor.
  • Provides performance feedback to individual employees and reports any concerns to management.
  • Instructs other maintenance staff in the proper use and care of hand-tools, equipment, hardware, materials, and supplies; in the use of various maintenance and construction materials and supplies; and in proper maintenance and construction practices and techniques.
  • Ensures that proper safety procedures are followed.
  • Works from plans, sketches, and blueprints to ensure proper work is being performed.
  • Cleans, repairs and maintains equipment and tools as appropriate and ensures proper storage.
  • Relocates various equipment and furniture throughout the district.
  • Determines if maintenance can repair or have a contractor brought in due to complexity and time needed for the repair.
  • Performs HVAC preventative maintenance on all HVAC equipment in various facilities.
  • Diagnoses and repairs all HVAC equipment found in disrepair.
  • Purchases materials necessary for completion of jobs.
  • Resolves plumbing backups, installations, and repairs on all plumbing fixtures throughout district.
  • Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

Work Environment

Employees in this classification are normally exposed to a typical school or related campus environment. There will be prolonged periods of standing or walking, and there may be frequent bending, crawling, stooping, or stretching. There are occasions that require the lifting or pulling of equipment or supplies, running, or other demanding physical activity. Reading, listening, writing, and speaking are requirements. There are occasional exceptional physical or sensory demands that may include exposure to unfavorable or potentially dangerous conditions.

  • Heavy lifting of up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Frequent climbing up to twenty-five (25) feet, and/or working on building roofs.
  • Exposure to heavy dust, dirt, chemical or paint fumes, or other airborne matter.
  • Exposure to extreme heat, electric current, hazardous chemicals, or other potential hazards.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods with limited control over rest periods.
  • Other: Must drive to various locations to perform work. Uses or operates hand-tools and electric or gas-powered equipment. Will work outdoors in all weather conditions.
