About the roleAs a Switchgear Field Service Technician, you are the on-site expert ensuring Powell equipment operates safely, reliably, and to spec across the US and Canada. Your week might start on the West Coast commissioning a new PCR, jump to the Gulf Coast South for breaker testing, include an offshore rotation, and wrap up on the East Coast with a planned maintenance outage. You will install, test, troubleshoot, and maintain AC/DC switchgear and power control rooms with a relentless focus on safety and quality.A day in the lifeArrive prepared and aligned with Powell safety and quality standards; review job plans, lockout/tagout, and test procedures.Perform installations of switchgear and PCRs; oversee small crews when needed or support in-house fabrication between field assignments.Execute acceptance and maintenance testing: insulation (megger), ductor (low resistance), Hi-Pot, torque verification, and full mechanical/functional checks.Document everything on time: weekly timesheets, signed service/repair orders, materials used, and clear post-job reports.Communicate schedule and progress routinely with the Field Operations Scheduler and District Service Manager.Inspect assigned vehicle and all calibrated tools/equipment; ensure readiness and compliance.Coordinate professionally with project management, customers, vendors, and labor resources.Support the Services Manufacturing group with construction, installation, wiring, and testing tasks as needed.Travel and scheduleMaintain flexible hours with overtime and periodic weekend work; travel locally and domestically up to 85% annually across West Coast, Gulf Coast South, offshore, and East Coast regions.Training and toolsWe provide safety and technical training plus full office support. Once qualified, you receive a company vehicle, standard tooling, test equipment, a laptop, phone compensation, and a company expense card.Minimum qualifications2+ years as a shop and/or field electrical or breaker technician.Working knowledge of ANSI/IEEE C37 standards for breakers and switchgear design/manufacture.Familiarity with ANSI/IEEE device function numbers, conductor ampacities in switchgear, and air/surface creepage clearances.Ability to write accurate test reports and project summaries and explain basic anomalies.Preferred qualificationsRead and interpret contactor and circuit breaker schematics.Understanding of Hi-Pot and low resistance testing.Hands-on functional testing of breakers and electrical switchgear.NICET Level 1 certification.HUET/Offshore Survival Training (provided if not certified).NFPA 70E trained (training can be provided).OSHA 10/30 trained (training can be provided).Skills and abilitiesBasic understanding of bus and structural modification design/manufacture.Solid grasp of electrical theory and control circuits (Ohm's Law; AC/DC fundamentals).Ability to assist senior technicians with maintenance, repair, installation, upgrades, and retrofills on Powell switchgear and power control rooms.Working environmentIndustrial settings both locally and throughout the continental United States.
