Norwood is seeking a skilled CNC Swiss Programmer/Applications Engineer to join the Turning Technologies team. The role focuses on programming and operating Swiss-type machines, with significant on-floor time for hands-on work and continuous improvement initiatives.

Ideal candidates will have a strong CAM background, ability to read engineering drawings, and experience optimizing tooling, speeds, and feeds for high-quality production. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential.

Qualifications

  • Requires a 4-year degree in engineering or related field.
  • Experience programming and operating CNC Swiss machines using CAM software.
  • Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize CNC programs for Swiss-type screw machines using CAM software.
  • Collaborate with NPD/NPI teams to handoff programs to operations.
  • Interpret/create engineering drawings, specifications, and CAD models for efficient machining.
  • Select and optimize cutting tools, speeds, and feeds for productivity and tool life.
  • Set up and operate Swiss machines, including tool changes and offsets.
  • Perform first-article inspections to ensure part quality.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and adjust programs as needed.
  • Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and QC to improve processes.
  • Maintain documentation of programs, tooling, and setup procedures.
  • Identify and implement automation solutions including robotics.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced CNC Swiss Programmer/Applications Engineer to join our Turning Technologies team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in programming and operating CNC Swiss machines, utilizing CAM software. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with a proven ability to develop efficient and accurate programs for complex parts, ensuring high-quality production and minimizing downtime. This is a hands‑on role that requires up to 50%-70% of your time to be spent on the manufacturing floor.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to
  • Develop and optimize CNC programs for Swiss-type screw machines using CAM software.
  • Collaborate with NPD/NPI teams to handoff programs to operations.
  • Interpret/create engineering drawings, specifications, and CAD models to create accurate and efficient machining processes.
  • Select and optimize cutting tools, speeds, and feeds to maximize productivity and tool life.
  • Set up and operate Swiss machines, including tool changes, offsets, and program adjustments.
  • Perform first-article inspections and ensure parts meet quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve machining issues, making necessary program adjustments.
  • Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and quality control personnel to improve processes and resolve problems.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of programs, tooling, and setup procedures.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Identify and implement automation solutions for turning technologies including robotics.
Skills
  • Strong understanding of multi-channel programming utilizing CAM software.
  • 2D/3D modelling experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments and quality control procedures.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Self-starter and team player.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to learn and support other turn‑mill and multi‑spindle lathe applications.
Preferred
  • 10+ years of experience CNC programming.
  • High School Diploma with 15+ years of similar experience OR a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field with 5-10+ years of similar engineering experience.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC) knowledge.
