Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Boston is hiring a Swim Instructor I & II to teach swimming lessons under the YMCA model. This part-time, non-exempt hourly role requires active lifeguard certifications and experience teaching swim lessons, with focus on children and safety.

Under the Aquatics Director, you will carry out lesson plans, ensure timely classes, maintain equipment, and communicate progress with parents. The position emphasizes safety, punctuality, and excellent member service.

Qualifications

• Must have experience teaching swim lessons
• Must have experience working with children
• Must have active Lifeguard Certifications (e.g., YMCA, Red Cross)
• Must be able to work on-site and adhere to YMCA policies

Responsibilities

• Provide excellent member service by exceeding member expectations.
• Report on the deck 15 minutes before the scheduled shift wearing a bathing suit.
• Prepare equipment and store it promptly after class.
• Start and end classes on time.
• Commit to teaching for an entire session; minimize absences.
• Communicate child’s progress with parents regularly.
• Enforce pool rules and safety procedures.
• Know and implement emergency procedures as needed.
• Maintain accurate attendance and skill records for each class.
• Take notes on strengths/weaknesses of each child.
• Maintain control and safety; keep children within arm’s reach.
• Integrate the five program components into each lesson: safety, water orientation, stroke development, water sports, personal growth.
• Maintain communication with supervisors and participate in safety drills and trainings.
• Attend required monthly and yearly trainings.
• Engage with members to build relationships and understand individual goals.
• Maintain a professional YMCA image and demeanor.
• Perform any other duties as assigned.
