POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes all individuals and provides leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes under the supervision of the Aquatic Leadership.

Essential Functions:

  1. Complete all necessary paperwork and record keeping in a timely manner (attendance, progress tracker, certification of achievements, accident reports).
  2. Be prepared and relationship-ready by setting up equipment before class and putting it away afterward. Report any damaged equipment.
  3. Spend adequate time in the water to develop participants to their fullest potential and provide exceptional instruction.
  4. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
  5. Maintain a positive and cooperative attitude when sharing site space, including appropriate voice levels and space usage.
  6. Provide appropriate attention to class and participants, avoiding socializing with other personnel during class time.
  7. Instruct swim lessons according to YMCA guidelines, using prepared lesson plans.
  8. Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and safety procedures.
  9. Attend all meetings and trainings as assigned.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  2. Effective communication with diverse groups of people.
  3. Minimum age of 16 years.
  4. Complete all New Employee Orientation trainings within 30 days of hire.

Member Engagement:

  1. Model the Crossroads YMCA staff pledge to ensure a legendary experience for participants.
  2. Recommend and encourage members to participate in YMCA programs.
  3. Develop professional relationships to foster small communities.
  4. Support the YMCA annual campaign by inviting members to participate.
  5. Promote diversity and inclusion within the environment.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  1. Ability to work accurately at a fast pace.
  2. Effective communication skills (visual, auditory, verbal).
  3. Work in environments with humidity, dampness, and heat.
  4. High alertness, concentration, and initiative required.
  5. Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform job responsibilities.
  6. Ability to lift 50 lbs., stand, walk, or sit for extended periods, occasionally stoop/bend.
