Job summary

The West Suburban YMCA in Newton, MA is seeking a Full Time Swim Instructor to lead swimming classes and ensure safe, engaging lessons. Starting pay is $15.50 per hour, dependent on experience and certifications.

Responsibilities include teaching according to YMCA guidelines, maintaining records, and supporting program growth. Must hold CPR/First Aid/AED and YMCA Swim Instructor credentials or equivalents; age 15+ is required.

Qualifications

  • CPR/First Aid/AED and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
  • Demonstrate all swim strokes and instructor skills per YMCA standards.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct swim lessons per YMCA guidelines with safety as priority.

  • Maintain attendance and progress records.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • 1. Instructs swim lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines (i.e. keeping swimmers safe, challenged, and actively engaged, maintain a safe swimming environment, and enforcing pool rules & policies), having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  • 2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • 3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules; and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  • 4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.)
  • 5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • 6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports, as necessary.
  • 7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • 8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  • 9. Willingness to accept responsibilities and duties other than those assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 1. Minimum age of 15.
  • 2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
  • 3. Must be able to demonstrate all stokes and swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • 4. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, or equivalent preferred.
  • 5. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent preferred.
Physical Demands:
  • 1. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke technique.
  • 2. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
  • 3. Ability to swim and demonstrate all strokes and skills.
