Job summary

The Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA is seeking a Swim Instructor to support aquatic programming and youth development. You will deliver YMCA-approved swim lessons, maintain records, and foster safe, welcoming environments for participants and families.

Responsibilities include building relationships with students and parents, coordinating with staff, and complying with all safety policies. Certification requirements are listed in the qualifications and must be met before hire.

Qualifications

• Certifications listed: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid.
• Demonstrate swim instructor skills per YMCA standards.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
• YMCA Team Leader Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Must be at least 15 years old.

Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plans.
• Builds authentic relationships with students and parents; encourages parent involvement and volunteers.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers participants to other programs as appropriate.
• Maintains attendance and progress records.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including safety procedures; completes incident reports as necessary.
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment; reports damaged equipment.
• Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
