Job summary

East Palo Alto Family YMCA is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to teach swimming and water safety to individuals and groups. You will develop lesson plans, provide clear instruction, monitor progress, and communicate with parents to boost confidence in the water.

Role requires CPR/AED, first aid, and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire, and YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent. Salary is $23–$25 per hour, with a supportive, safety-focused environment.

Qualifications

• CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen certifications due within 30 days of hire.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
• Ability to recognize students who may need assistance.
• Ability to recognize and remedy hazardous situations.
• Ability to swim in shallow and deep water and tread water.
• Patience and clear communication.

Responsibilities

• Provide swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages.
• Plan and implement program activities that are culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate.
• Help create new approaches to serve the needs of participants.
• Adhere to safety and cleanliness standards and evidence-based practices.
• Maintain supervision of students and support to ensure a positive learning environment.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings.
• Follow YMCA policies, including safety procedures and emergencies.
• Maintain positive relationships with parents and caregivers.
• Complete abuse prevention training.
• Supervise high-risk activities and report unsafe behavior.
• Follow mandated reporting laws for suspected abuse.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
