Job summary

YMCA in Schertz, TX is seeking a Swim Instructor to provide safe, engaging swim classes for youth and adults, following YMCA guidelines and lesson plans. You will build positive relationships with students and families and help them connect with aquatic programs.

You will plan and deliver lessons, maintain attendance and progress records, and participate in trainings to stay current with safety procedures and YMCA standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 16 years old
• YMCA approved basic life saving to include CPR, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen administration
• Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
• Must demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards

Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs
• Maintains records as required (attendance, progress reports, etc.)
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures; completes incident and accident reports as necessary
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment; reports damaged equipment
• Reports to duty 10 minutes before shift and secures a substitute if necessary with proper notification
• Other duties as assigned

• Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor aquatic environment.
• Ability to instruct andobserveparticipants in proper stroke techniques.
• Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
• Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
• Visual acuity isrequiredto see and observe all sections of assigned zone or area of responsibility. Must be able to see and recognize aquatic distress above and below the water surface.
• Ability to respond properly to medicalemergencyis necessary.
• Ability to sit and stand forlong periodsat a timearerequired, as well as the ability to hold breath under water when necessary.
