Job summary

YMCA of Greater San Antonio is seeking a Swim Instructor in Texas to provide engaging and safe swim instruction for youth and families. You will implement lesson plans, foster positive relationships with participants and families, and promote YMCA aquatics programs.

The role requires maintaining certifications (CPR/AED/First Aid) and completing child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire, while upholding YMCA safety and program guidelines.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• YMCA approved basic life saving certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
• Child abuse prevention training to be completed within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
• Ability to demonstrate YMCA swim-instructor skills.

Responsibilities

• Instruct swim lessons per YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plans.
• Builds strong relationships with students and parents.
• Communicates program information and directs to other YMCA offerings.
• Maintains attendance and progress records.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings.
• Follows YMCA policies and safety procedures; reports incidents as needed.
• Sets up class equipment and reports any damage.
• Arrives 10 minutes before shift and coordinates substitutes if needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Instructs swimming lessonsin accordance withYMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and asappropriate refersstudents and parents to other programs.
• Maintains records asrequired(i.e.attendance, progress reports, etc.).
• Attends staff meetings andtrainingsas scheduled.
• Followsall YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accidentreportsas necessary.
• Organizes and puts awayneededclass equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
• Reports to duty 10 minutes beforeshiftand secures a substitute if necessary and with proper notification.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor aquatic environment.
• Ability to instruct andobserveparticipants in proper stroke techniques.
• Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
• Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
• Visual acuity isrequiredto see and observe all sections of assigned zone or area of responsibility. Must be able to see and recognize aquatic distress above and below the water surface.
• Ability to respond properly to medicalemergencyis necessary.
• Ability to sit and stand forlong periodsat a timearerequired, as well as the ability to hold breath under water when necessary.
