Job summary

Moog Space and Defense Group seeks a Sustainment Engineer in Santa Barbara, CA to support field sustainment, maintenance, and modernization of turreted weapon systems for US military applications.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering and 5+ years of relevant experience, with strong abilities in interpreting complex engineering documents, root cause analysis, and interfacing with customers and suppliers. Travel and security clearance are typical aspects of this position.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience supporting sustainment, fielding, maintenance, or modernization of complex military or aerospace systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, schematics, specifications, interface control documents, and military standards.
  • Detailed working knowledge of hydraulic or mechanical actuation products or electronics assembly and test areas.
  • Proven experience coordinating and interfacing with customers and/or suppliers on complex projects or issues.
  • Proven capabilities in Root Cause/Failure Analysis, component repair process improvement and planning.
  • Ability to Obtain and retain a Secret Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop operation/test/maintenance instructions for field service operations supporting US Military personnel.
  • Review technical accuracy of maintainability analyses and provide technical advisement.
  • Lead efforts to establish a comprehensive Configuration Management process.
  • Define scope of work for all engineering changes and validate effectiveness to exceed customer expectations.
  • Review and design procedures for future field retrofits as applicable.
  • Identify required Special Tools and Test Equipment for each engineering change.
  • Review and make recommendations for changes to Technical Manuals and repair procedures.
  • Provide engineering support to Moog departments to improve product quality and on-time delivery.
  • Maintain understandings of turreted product designs and applications.

Job Title: Sustainment Engineer

Reporting To: Manager, Sustainment

Work Schedule: Onsite - Santa Barbara, CA

Moog Space and Defense Group provides sub-systems and components for every mission critical system on a modern military vehicle. Our heritage is in electrohydraulic and electromechanical actuation systems and now, through acquisitions and internal development of full Turreted Weapon Systems (TWS) solutions. Our Space and Defense Group is looking for a Sustainment Engineer to join our team in Goleta, CA. This is a cross-functional role that requires coordination between many different groups within and outside of Moog.

Here's what you’ll need to bring with you:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and at least 5-years relevant technical experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the sustainment, fielding, maintenance, or modernization of complex military or aerospace systems throughout the product lifecycle
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, Bills of Material (BOMs), schematics, specifications, interface control documents, and military standards to support sustainment activities
  • Detailed working knowledge of hydraulic or mechanical actuation products or electronics (or related technologies) assembly and test areas, including extensive interfacing with technicians
  • Proven experience coordinating and interfacing with customers and/or suppliers on complex projects or issues
  • Proven capabilities in areas of Root Cause/Failure Analysis, component repair process improvement and planning
  • Ability to Obtain and retain a Secret Clearance
As a Sustainment Engineer, you will…
  • Develop operation/test/maintenance instructions that will enhance field service operations supporting US Military personnel to maintain operation and integrity of Weapon Systems. These instructions include the development of maintenance procedures associated with Technical Manuals (-10 & 20), Technical Bulletins, Retrofit procedures, etc.
  • Review technical accuracy of maintainability analyses and technical publications and provides technical advisement to subordinate personnel, design engineering and aftermarket disciplines.
  • Lead efforts to establish a comprehensive Configuration Management process.
  • Define scope of work for all engineering changes and validate the effectiveness of all changes to exceed customer expectations.
  • Review and design procedures for all future field retrofits as applicable.
  • Identify all required Special Tools and Test Equipment (STTE), material requirements and level of effort for each engineering change.
  • Review and make recommendations for changes to all Technical Manuals, parts kitting and repair procedures for associated LRU’s.
  • Assure and maintain product integrity and quality in production products.
  • Provide engineering support as required to other Moog departments to maintain and improve product quality, cost avoidance initiatives and on time delivery as required by contract.
  • Maintain a thorough and deep understanding of all designs and application associated with turreted products.
  • Provide training to other sustainment team members in the repair and overhaul of retrograde material.
  • Identify areas for quality improvements in production assembly/test and product design.
  • Initiate these changes and plan for schedule impacts.
  • Oversee Maintainability and ILS support of proposals including the review and interpretation of the technical documentation package, identification of technical exceptions and the preparation of cost estimates and technical write ups.
  • Work directly with US Military depots to establish reset and overhaul requirements.
  • Assist depot personnel performing work to OEM standards in the processes and procedures to return a weapon system to fully mission capable status with all associated retrofits/rework, mandatory replacement of LRU’s and functional testing.
  • Directly support business development efforts by providing technical content support and defining requirements to capture additional contracts.
  • Travel to sub vendor/partner locations to establish requirements for spares management, cost reduction and On Time Delivery (OTD).
  • Develop Configuration Management planning and establish baseline requirements for all turreted weapon systems upgrades (retrofit, ECP, etc.) and rework as required.
  • Identify areas of opportunity and concern for spares management; to include availability, vendor resourcing and pricing.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to sustainment operations in the development of FSR training (resources, curriculum, etc.)

Salary Range Transparency:
  • Santa Barbara, CA $140,000.00-$165,000.00 Annually

The base salary range represents the low and high end of the Moog salary range for this position in the given work location. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range(s) listed is just one component of Moog's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, employee stock purchase plan, an open paid time off policy, and many region-specific benefits.
