Job summary

Velo3D in California is seeking a Sr. Manager, Sustaining Process Engineering to lead the team responsible for qualifying, monitoring, and continuously improving the LPBF metal 3D printer fleet in production.

You will set the technical strategy for tool qualification and health monitoring, grow and develop engineers and technicians, and partner with Applications, Hardware, Software, and Manufacturing to ensure part quality as the fleet scales.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Manufacturing, or related)
• 6+ years in advanced manufacturing/process engineering, including metal AM/LPBF or similar
• 2+ years directly managing or leading engineers (hiring, performance management)
• Desire to scale sustaining/qualification engineering in a high-growth environment

Responsibilities

• Lead, hire, mentor, and develop a team of Process Engineers & Technicians for printer qualification and continuous improvement across the fleet
• Own planning and prioritization for sustaining process engineering
• Set and enforce standards for experimental design, statistical rigor, and data-driven decisions
• Review and approve qualification reports and root-cause investigations
• Manage the metrology lab and oversight of lab equipment and technicians
• Set and audit metrology procedures and acceptance criteria
• Own hiring, training, and performance management for metrology staff
• Collaborate with Hardware and Software teams to validate new printer features and align sustaining priorities with the roadmap
• Establish SOPs and analysis guides to promote consistency across shifts
• Monitor KPVs to flag hardware degradation and pre-empt failures
• Drive continuous improvement to decrease requalification time and improve efficiency
• Represent sustaining engineering in cross-functional planning and customer discussions
