ROLE SUMMARY

The Packaging Manager will oversee packaging sustainability programs across all company strategic business units, managing a portfolio of projects to drive our corporate sustainability goals, developing and driving new innovation programs to implement packaging and product formats designed for sustainability and lower environmental impact.

Responsibilities will include working with internal partners and external organizations to drive material sustainability improvements and opportunities for the business to leverage and pursue.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
  • The individual will lead the development of packaging sustainability programs aligned with corporate sustainability pillars, collaborating closely with external converters and technology suppliers on projects from initiation through manufacturing feasibility. Projects will involve modifications to packaging for existing products, as well as packaging for new products, to ensure the delivery of environmentally friendly and sustainable formats.

  • To lead exploration of new innovative materials, systems, technologies, and packaging formats in product and packaging development opportunities. This encompasses primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging formats across retail, B2B, distribution, and e-commerce, including re-use and refill solutions throughout the portfolio.

  • Sustainability compliance falls under the position, so a background in global packaging legislative and regulatory changes is required.

  • The individual will define and achieve project deliverables to ensure compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility requirements, minimizing the company's exposure to penalties, fees, or restrictions on sales.

  • To be a champion and "go to" person in representing the department on sustainability requirements, supporting the SBU teams in finding solutions to packaging issues and driving the programs for the elimination of problematic materials, compliance requirements, and optimization of sustainable solutions without compromising quality, performance, and consumer expectations.

  • The role will facilitate education and communication regarding sustainability practices, promote the use of sustainability design tools throughout the business, and provide any necessary training programs through internal or external partners.

  • Be a key member in enhancing domestic and global reporting for legislative, corporate, and customer sustainability targets, while tracking programs that deliver sustainability benefits against the corporate scorecard.

  • Collaborate with business teams to evaluate the impact of Lifecycle Analysis and support the pursuit of sustainable future packaging formats.

  • Act as a key liaison with sustainability organizations, representing Church and Dwight, helping to drive approaches for corporate sustainability.

  • Maintain awareness of both domestic and international legislation changes affecting materials compliance

  • In addition to working within cross-functional teams, the individual will also work closely with quality, finance, procurement, regulatory, legal, engineering, operations, consultants and outside vendors.

POSITION ACTIVITIES
  • Ensuring all EPR regulatory compliance standards remain up to date to enable accurate reporting throughout the year.

  • Be a point person for Church and Dwight with key external organizations supporting our EPR activities.

  • Conduct Packaging LCA analytics for assessment of environmental impact with packaging changes.

  • Review legislative and regulatory changes in required packaging sustainability requirements.

  • Generation and execution of test plans and reports.

  • Provide expertise and support to the packaging team in assessment of material recyclability status, in line with the APR and H2R guidelines and standards in the USA, and equivalent agencies globally.

  • Work with independent laboratories or facilities to test materials for recyclability.

  • Participate in governmental policy reviews and membership organization meetings supporting our sustainability and End Producer Responsibility goals.

  • Input into sustainability reports and liaison with Corporate Sustainability Stewardship for key customers and Non-Government Organizations on our sustainability scorecards.

  • Creation and driving of project timelines and build of roadmaps targeting progress against sustainability goals.

  • Coordination and completion of qualification programs for new sustainable package designs, technologies and materials

  • Assess and recommend feasibility of new technologies or materials to improve our sustainability footprint.

  • Travel to vendor and manufacturing locations for support of packaging project activities.

  • Hands-on evaluation of packaging for conformance to project requirements. These activities can occur in warehouses, at suppliers and in packaging laboratory studies.

  • Working alongside Packaging Technicians or Packaging Engineers in the delivery of sustainability projects and qualifications.

  • Generation of new sustainable ideas and development of sustainable concepts to proof of principle through the R&D FutureWorks program.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • 10 years of experience in package development, device or hard goods manufacturing. A preference will be towards candidates who have experience in "consumer goods" packaging areas

  • BS degree in Package Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering sciences required
