Job summary

City of Commerce City is seeking a Sustainable Development Specialist to guide sustainable building practices and ensure projects align with the Sustainability Index in our Land Development Code.

You will review plans, liaise with developers and engineers, and collaborate with the Green Initiatives Program to promote energy efficiency and high-quality design across municipal projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Energy Policy, Environmental Policy, Urban Planning or related field.
  • LEED GA or other LEED certification is preferred.
  • 1–3 years of progressively responsible experience in sustainability, energy policy, planning, or building performance programs.

Responsibilities

  • Review projects and permits to ensure compliance with environmental standards and sustainable design principles.
  • Serve as liaison between the building/development community and city departments.
  • Support implementation of the Sustainability Index in the Land Development Code.
  • Collaborate with the Green Initiatives Program and external partners to advance energy efficiency.
  • Coordinate with ECV Division, CD Department, Colorado Energy Office and DRCOG.

*This position is grant funded through the Denver Regional Council of Government (DRCOG) Building Policy Collaborative program. The duration of this appointment is guaranteed until fall 2029.

Hiring salary is dependent upon experience.

The hiring range is $80,680.24 - 89,644.71 / annually.

Under the guidance of the Sustainability Manager, you will serve as a key resource and liaison for the building and development community, ensuring that projects align with the Sustainability Index outlined in our recently amended Land Development Code. This position allows you to bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and the practical needs of developers, architects, and engineers, fostering innovation and best practices in the built environment. Your expertise will be crucial in reviewing projects and permits to guarantee compliance with environmental standards while enhancing energy efficiency and sustainable design. By collaborating through our Green Initiatives Program, you will empower stakeholders to navigate compliance seamlessly, reduce environmental impact, and elevate the value of their projects. One to three years of progressively responsible experience in sustainability, energy policy, planning, code implementation, or building performance programs. LEED GA certification or other LEED certification A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties of the position may be considered.
