Job description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Provides technical support working independently but under the direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS).
  • Performs delegated responsible charge surveying activities under the direction of a RPLS until licensed.
  • Researches and reviews previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys.
  • Performs survey activities in accordance with standards set by the company, state statutes and the surveying industry.
  • Records the results of surveys including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features.
  • Verifies the accuracy of survey data including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
  • Coordinates data and results of the work with Survey office personnel, engineering personnel, clients, and others project stakeholders.
  • Writes descriptions of property boundary surveys for use in deeds, easements, or other legal documents.
  • Maintains detailed and organized project notes and documentation.
  • Provides supporting information and/or documentation about measurements, calculations, results of surveying activities to the responsible charge RPLS. Operates and has knowledge of survey equipment functions and capabilities.
  • Fosters and maintains client relationships. Helps pursue repeat or follow-up work with current clients.
  • Assists the Department Manager with proposals from a bottom-up perspective to provide insight into estimated completion timelines for various phases of a project.
  • Logs all work and performs such other tasks in accordance with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS) Administrative Rules and the Texas Land Surveying Practices Act in anticipation of an application to become a RPLS in Texas.
  • Adheres to established company policies and follows all Survey procedures.
  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Maintains equipment and vehicle as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Surveyor in Training (SIT) designation from TBPELS.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Safety sensitive position subject to annual and random drug testing.
  • English language skills: ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to clients or CEC employees.
  • Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, statistics, and trigonometry.
  • Reasoning skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including Microsoft Office and AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Experience with Bentley MicroStation/OpenRoads/InRoads, and Trimble Business Center also helpful.
  • Organizational skills: ability to prioritize and organize tasks; ability to handle multiple clients and tasks simultaneously; ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Remote connectivity device (e.g., smart phone, tablet, etc.) with data plan sufficient for company requirements, including multi-factor authentication, time and mileage tracking, expense reimbursement, e-mail, and virtual communications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

When office work is required:

-Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a technical or administrative nature.

-Intermittently, ability to sit up to eight hours per day.

-Ability to manipulate computer mouse up to eight hours per day.

When field work is required:

-Some heavy physical activity performing strenuous day activities of a primarily productive/technical nature.

-Ability to stand and walk up to ten hours per day.

-Ability to traverse uneven terrain and climb over or crawl under obstacles.

-Ability to occasionally bend, crouch or stoop.

-Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, frequently over uneven surfaces.

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, work with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
  • Ability to hear and talk, to communicate, and give verbal direction.
  • Ability to see clearly 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more; ability to identify and distinguish colors; ability to adjust focus; depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships).
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Office setting: Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office/production setting with adequate ventilation.
  • Field setting: Outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions (rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.), dust, dirt, cuts, bites, or stings.
  • Requires use of protective and/or safety equipment.
WORK SCHEDULE
  • Monday through Friday normally; occasional weekend work may be required.
  • Flexible schedule with extended hours may be required.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

This position includes safety-sensitive job functions, and random screenings will be conducted in accordance with CEC’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.
