Office Location: St. Cloud, MN
This is an opportunity to participate in establishing and expanding Apex Engineering Group’s services in the region. The Survey Crew Chief will primarily lead survey crews in the field by providing topographic, boundary, and construction surveys on various civil engineering projects including highway and urban roadway projects. Ideally, the Survey Crew Chief will be capable of writing legal descriptions for boundary surveys, certifying right of way and subdivision plats, performing title and deed searches, which are typical for satisfying professional land surveying and industry standards. This position will report to the Survey Department Manager located in our Fargo office.
Typical Tasks and Duties:
- Provide land surveying services for construction, topographic, right-of-way, easements, subdivision plats, and control survey projects.
- Gather field survey data using conventional surveying and GPS methods.
- Research existing record information, including record maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right of way documents.
- Have a general knowledge of, or if licensed, may be required to write or review legal descriptions related to right of way documents, subdivision plats, and record surveys.
- Prepare accurate field notes, drawings, and records of changes in conditions while in the field.
- Delegate survey tasks to other survey technicians under supervision.
- May be required to clear vegetation, dig holes, and pound stakes with hand tools.
- Follow surveying methods and standards as required by state and public agencies.
- Participate in pre-survey planning meetings with the Survey Department Manager, providing updates and progress reports.
- This role may lead to a more senior position, including responsibilities for project budgets, estimates, and financial performance.
- Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements:
- LSIT or PLS licensed in North Dakota or Minnesota, or the ability to obtain PLS within 12 months.
- 5+ years of topographic and highway/roadway construction staking experience.
- Proficient with GPS, robotic, and total station survey equipment.
- Familiar with NDDOT or MnDOT survey data collection and construction survey methods is a plus.
- Perform complex surveying calculations using engineering calculators, laptops, and software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
- Availability to work scheduled hours, with travel and out-of-town stays as required; overtime during the construction season may be necessary.
- Ability to work independently, make rational judgments, and communicate effectively with contractors, engineering staff, and project representatives.
Physical Requirements:
- Operate a computer under ergonomic conditions.
- Work outdoors at construction sites near traffic.
- Prolonged standing and walking for surveying tasks.
- Lift equipment or objects weighing 50-75 pounds.
- Work scheduled hours on-site or in the office.
- Follow safety policies and company guidelines.
- Perform responsibilities ethically and with attention to detail.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
