Job summary

Novant Health is hiring a Surgical Technologist for the Operating Room at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. The role involves assisting with patient care, maintaining sterile technique, and supporting the surgical team in a fast-paced OR environment.

Education required in a surgical technology program or equivalent, with licensure/certification preferred. Weekend day schedule; benefits eligibility is noted.

Qualifications

• High School or GED required.
• Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology program or Military Training Equivalent (68D – Operating Room Specialist).
• Online Surgical Tech program credits will not be accepted.
• Incumbents without accredited training or certification must obtain certification within 12 months of hire and pass competency testing.

Responsibilities

• Assist with patient care following policies and procedures and regulatory standards.
• Maintain clinical and professional surgical services competencies.
• Assist in maintaining security of medications.
• Set up sterile field and instruments for procedures; scrub, gown, and glove scrubbed personnel.
• Pass instruments to surgeon; maintain sterile technique during procedures.
• Prepare sterile dressings and instruments for sterilization; clean room and prep for next patient.

What You'll Do

• Assists with patient care while complying with Novant Health policies and procedures and regulatory standards.


• Maintains clinical and professional surgical services competencies.


• Assists in maintaining the security of medications.


• Practices effective interpersonal communication skills


• Under supervision and direction, checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves.


• Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure.


• Performs counts per Novant Health policy.


• Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.


• Helps in draping sterile field. Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure.


• Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.


• Prepares sterile dressings.


• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.


• Assists other members of team with cleaning of room.


• Assists in prepping room for the next patient.


• All other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

• Education: High School or GED, required. Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology program or Military Training Equivalent (68D – Operating Room Specialist). For incumbents who are not graduates of an accredited School of Surgical Technology or have certification please see additional skills required. Online Surgical Tech program credits will not be accepted.


• Experience: Previous Surgical Technologist experience, preferred.


• Licensure/Certification: Current Surgical Tech Certification, preferred.


• Additional Skills/Requirements (required): For incumbents who are not graduates of an accredited School of Surgical Technology or have certification the following additional requirements apply: new graduates must obtain certification within 12months of hire. Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skill validation and competency testing. Demonstrate effective and appropriate customer service skills, verbal and nonverbal communication techniques, interpersonal relationship skills, and time management skills.
