Job Summary and Qualifications

The Surgical Technologist Extern provides high-quality, patient-centered care by performing delegated basic patient care services to support the efficient operation of the surgical suite. Under supervision, assists the surgical staff in the perioperative process according to training and department needs, maintaining a clean, organized, and safe environment. Must be enrolled and in good standing in an approved surgical technology program and capable of performing higher-level procedures upon competency.

• Organizes the operating suite with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the day, reviewing daily cases and ensuring proper functioning of equipment.
• Prepares and maintains an orderly sterile instrument table, utilizing physician preference cards for setup.
• Prepares for emergency and add-on cases efficiently.
• Provides care and comfort for patients throughout the perioperative process.
• Transports patients as needed and assists with patient positioning, prepping, and draping.
• Performs and assists in scrub/gown/glove procedures, passing instruments, operating equipment, monitoring patients, handling medications or specimens, and replenishing supplies.
• Completes sponge, sharp, and instrument counts, reporting discrepancies.
• Participates in room turnover and maintains a safe, organized environment.
• Participates in patient and procedural verification, responds to emergencies, and maintains confidentiality and patient rights.
• Adheres to asepsis principles, universal precautions, and safety protocols.
• Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and team members.
• Contributes to performance improvement initiatives and meets safety and service goals.
• Performs other duties as assigned, practicing the organization's Code of Conduct and values.

Qualifications Needed

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
• Currently enrolled in an approved Surgical Technologist program.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.
