Primary responsibility involves performance of specific tasks as a scrub technologist in an operating room. Assists with the maintenance of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. Maintains positive customer relations. Demonstrates competency and possesses the technical skills appropriate for assigned cases and utilizes that knowledge in assisting others. Performs various duties within scope of responsibility and is accountable to the Clinical Nurse Manager of the Operating Room.

Responsibilities
  1. Engages in population-appropriate communication.
  2. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  3. Identifies physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  4. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  5. Interprets population-related data and plans care accordingly.
  6. Identifies and responds to different needs resulting from psychological, religious, or cultural norms.
  7. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  8. Responsible for surgical preparation of procedures.
  9. Responsible for setting up sterile instrumentation, supplies, and equipment for procedures.
  10. Follows universal precautions according to hospital policy.
  11. Checks daily assignment and reviews surgical preference sheets to clarify routine and update as needed.
  12. Utilizes resources to obtain needed supplies for the case.
  13. Checks operative tables for complete readiness and ensures all items are present.
  14. Obtains physician’s special instruments and sutures prior to case start.
  15. Communicates with the surgeon about supply/equipment availability before case begins.
  16. Maintains aseptic technique during setup and procedures.
  17. Handles supplies and equipment knowledgeably and efficiently.
  18. Communicates pertinent information to relief personnel for safe continuity of care.
  19. Promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  20. Maintains punctual and regular attendance.
  21. Communicates courteously and timely with all team members.
  22. Shares relevant information with nursing management.
  23. Shares knowledge with colleagues and demonstrates flexibility.
  24. Takes breaks and lunches as per policy.
  25. Returns borrowed equipment properly.
  26. Assists with operative procedures under surgeon’s supervision, including suctioning, retraction, skin closure, suturing, and irrigation.
  27. Circulates during operative procedures under RN supervision.
  28. Assists with patient care at the end of surgery, including site preparation, cleansing, drainage connection, dressing, and transfer.
  29. Uses proper body mechanics and handles instruments carefully.
  30. Processes case cart and disassembles instruments for cleaning.
  31. Ensures instruments are properly cleaned and sent for sterilization or cleaning.
  32. Disposes of trash and linen properly.
  33. Helps expedite case turnaround and cleaning.
  34. Promotes safety for patients and staff, including proper instrument count and specimen identification.
  35. Performs safety checks on equipment and prepares/labels medications accurately.
  36. Maintains a clean operative field and keeps instruments sterile.
  37. Demonstrates professionalism, learns from experiences, and serves as a role model.
  38. Participates in committee work and educational activities, including orientation and in-services.
  39. Responds promptly to emergency calls and organizes needs efficiently.
  40. Acts as a Patient Advocate, respecting dignity and privacy, and prioritizing patient welfare.

Qualifications

Minimum: High school diploma or GED. Preferred: Associate degree in Surgical Technology. Certification as a surgical technologist is highly recommended within two years of hire. Experience: 0-6 months.
