Job description

Responsibilities

Assists in patient care and preparation of surgical patients; performs scrub duties and related procedures; responsible for ensuring cleaning and maintenance of supplies and equipment for the designated specialty. Acts as a preceptor, service specialist, and instrument room liaison.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

1. Assists the surgical team in the scrubbing role according to prescribed standards.
2. Maintains sterile field and reports immediately any breaches in aseptic technique.
3. Passes instruments, suture products, medications, and sponge materials to the surgeon.
4. Assists with retracting tissues and organs, and suctioning by holding the retracting instrument as placed by the surgeon.
5. Applies electrosurgical current as directed by the surgeon to an established instrument.
6. Performs surgical counts with the RN according to policy and procedure.
7. Ensures that appropriate equipment and supplies are available for each procedure.
8. Assists with housekeeping duties as directed to ensure a safe patient environment.
9. Assists RN with circulator duties under direct supervision.
10. Performs additional activities and duties as directed.

Qualifications

Education Required: High School Diploma/GED

Licensure/Certification Required: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C) required as of September 1, 2010, or 'grandfathered' employees, or LVN. BLS certification may be required in some locations.
