Position Summary:

The Surgical Technicians (ST) are professionals who assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients under the general direction of a registered nurse. The ST possesses expertise in sterile aseptic techniques and combines knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to facilitate surgeons' performance of invasive procedures. They establish and maintain sterile fields, ensure a sterile environment, and demonstrate proper sterile techniques. The ST prepares the Operating Room with appropriate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies, performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts accurately, and is willing to assist co-workers across various units and case loads.

Qualifications

Education:

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program required.

Experience:

• Previous hospital experience as a Surgical Technician preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

• The Operating Room Surgical Technician must meet one of the following minimum requirements per SC State Law 44-7-380:
• Certification from an accredited Surg Tech program and certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology within 90 days of graduation, with evidence of 15 hours of CEUs annually.
• Certification as Surg Tech by the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or US Public Health Service, with evidence of 15 hours of CEUs annually.
• Employment as a Surg Tech in a South Carolina healthcare facility or federal government prior to Jan 1, 2008, with evidence of 15 hours of CEUs annually.
