Job summary

HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center is seeking a Lead Certified Surgical Technologist to guide a skilled OR team, ensuring aseptic technique, proper instrument handling, and continued high-quality patient care. You will collaborate with surgeons and staff to prepare for procedures and maintain a safe, efficient operating room environment.

The role requires graduation from a Surgical Technology program, current certification, BCLS, and at least 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training is required.
• Certification in Surgical Technology is required.
• Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.
• 2+ years of Surgical Technologist experience is required.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
• Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by pulling the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
• Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
• Displays knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology to prepare and assist in surgical/endo procedures.
• Maintains a safe sterile field by positioning sharps correctly, labeling medications, understanding heat-generating devices, and participating in the surgical timeout to ensure patient safety.
• Sets up appropriately for a surgical/endo procedure and adheres to counting protocols to prevent retained foreign objects.
• Assists the physician during procedures with adequate knowledge of the procedure.
• Differentiates sutures and their applications.
• Participates in process improvement and teamwork in perioperative patient care.

What you will do in this role:

• Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
• Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by “pulling” the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
• Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
• Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology in order to prepare and assist in surgical/endo procedures.
• Maintains a safe sterile field by: a – positioning sharps correctly b – labeling all medications on sterile field c – understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d – Participating in a “timeout” with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety.
• Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical/ endo procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instrument to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient.
• Understands the principles of and is able to competently assist a physician during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
• Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications.
• Demonstrates the ability to follow through until problems are addressed or corrected.
• Alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
• Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase.
• Participates in department’s process improvement activities.

What Qualifications You Will Need:

• Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training in the Surgical Technologist role is required.
• Certification in Surgical Technology
• Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.
• 2 or more years of Surgical Technologist experience is Required
