Job summary

HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center in Houston, TX is seeking a Surgical Technologist to assist in the operating room, prepare sterile supplies, and support the surgical team throughout procedures.

The role emphasizes aseptic technique, proper instrument handling, patient safety, and collaboration with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesia staff to ensure high-quality perioperative care.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent.
  • Certification in Surgical Technology required.
  • Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing for surgery by pulling supplies and instruments.
  • Maintain a safe sterile field and proper labeling of medications.
  • Differentiate sutures and their applications for procedures.
  • Support physician during procedures with adequate instrument knowledge.
  • Participate in timeout and team safety for patient protection.
  • Collaborate with perioperative team and engage in process improvements.

Job Summary And Qualifications
  • Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by "pulling" the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
  • Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
  • Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology in order to prepare and assist in surgical/endo procedures.
  • Maintains a safe sterile field by: a - positioning sharps correctly b - labeling all medications on sterile field c - understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d - Participating in a "timeout" with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety.
  • Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical/ endo procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instrument to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient.
  • Understands the principles of and is able to competently assist a physician during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
  • Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow through until problems are addressed or corrected.
  • Alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
  • Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase.
  • Participates in department’s process improvement activities.
What Qualifications You Will Need:
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training in the Surgical Technologist role is required.
  • Certification in Surgical Technology
  • Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.
  • 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is Preferred.
