Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill is seeking a Surgical Technologist I to support the operating room team under surgeon and RN supervision. You will help ensure sterile technique, prep instruments, and assist the surgeon during procedures.

The role emphasizes patient safety, accurate counts, and proper labeling of supplies. Shift is Monday–Friday, 40 hours, with no weekends or holidays; scrubbing experience preferred but not required.

Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Provider.
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or Military Training in Surgical Technology; or formal education/training may substitute for 3+ years of experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs technical skill duties in all operating room areas, following accepted standards of practice.
• Maintains and sterilizes instruments and equipment; ensures aseptic technique.
• Performs surgical counts and reports discrepancies.
• Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities used.
• Assists in preparation and labeling of surgical specimens.
• Supports instrument setup and planning to aid in procedure flow.
• Assists surgeon and OR team, adapting scrubbing procedures as needed.
• Responds to emergencies and follows hospital emergency plans.
