Job summary

UPMC seeks a Surgical Technologist to support the operating room team under RN supervision. You will assist in sterilization, pass instruments, prepare sterile supplies, and handle specimens, ensuring aseptic technique and safety. You will help prep patients, drape rooms, transport as needed, and restock the OR.

Day shift, no weekends or holidays. 8-hour shifts (about 7:00 am–3:30 pm) with occasional late shifts, collaborating with surgeons, nurses, and students.

Qualifications

• Assists in sterile setup and instrument handling.
• Maintains aseptic technique and safety.
• Supports surgical team under RN supervision.

Responsibilities

• After surgery, may help transfer patients to recovery and restock OR.
• Serves as a resource to staff and precepts students.
• Assist in preparation, care for and disposal of specimens for lab analysis and dressings.
• Participates in committees and inter-disciplinary teams.
• Assist with sterile gown and glove setup.
• Prepare OR before operation; set up instruments, drapes, and equipment.
• Collaborates with Clinician to disseminate new knowledge.
• Ensure medications are labeled and handed to surgeon per policies.
• Maintain clean, safe environment and aseptic technique.
• Prepare patients by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites; assist in transport and positioning.
• During surgery, pass instruments, hold retractors, cut sutures, and assist as needed.
