Job summary

HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball is seeking a Surgical Tech to join our operating room team. The role requires knowledge of aseptic technique, sterile field maintenance, instrument setup, and collaboration with the surgical team to ensure patient safety.

The candidate should be a graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent, with certification in Surgical Technology and a current BCLS from the American Heart Association. One year of experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training.
• Certification in Surgical Technology.
• Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Applies aseptic technique and maintains a sterile field.
• Preps for surgery by gathering supplies and instruments.
• Recognizes surgical instruments and their applications.
• Assists with patient anatomy preparation for procedures.
• Maintains safe sterile field and proper labeling of medications on sterile field.
• Sets up for procedures and counts supplies/instruments to ensure no foreign object remains.
• Assists physician during procedures with adequate knowledge of the procedure.
• Differentiates sutures and their applications.
• Follows through to address or correct issues.
• Demonstrates teamwork during perioperative care.
• Participates in department process improvement activities.

Education

Surgical Technology program graduate or military equivalent

Certification in Surgical Technology

Current BCLS certification (American Heart Association)

1 year surgical technologist experience (preferred)

Job Summary and Qualifications

What you will do in this role:

• Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
• Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by "pulling" the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
• Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
• Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology in order to prepare and assist in surgical/endo procedures.
• Maintains a safe sterile field by: a - positioning sharps correctly b - labeling all medications on sterile field c - understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d - Participating in a "timeout" with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety.
• Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical/ endo procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instrument to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient.
• Understands the principles of and is able to competently assist a physician during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
• Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications.
• Demonstrates the ability to follow through until problems are addressed or corrected.
• Alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
• Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase.
• Participates in department's process improvement activities.

What Qualifications You Will Need:

• *** Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training in the Surgical Technologist role is required.**
• *** Certification in Surgical Technology**
• *** Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.**
• *** 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is preferred**
