Job summary

Rochester Regional Health is seeking a Surgical Technologist for the Gouverneur Operating Room. You will serve as the primary scrub technologist, preparing and managing instruments, supplies, and equipment, while maintaining a sterile field and aiding the surgical team.

Responsibilities include instrument handling, sterile technique, patient draping assistance, and contributing to post-operative care and staff orientation. Per diem, variable schedule, with a union environment (1199 SEIU).

Qualifications

• Surgical technology program completion and CST certification or LPN licensure in NY.
• Eligibility under stated grandfathering or hard-to-fill clauses as applicable.
• Candidate must meet New York licensure or credentialing requirements within stated timelines.

Responsibilities

• Maintain sterile field and perform aseptic technique throughout procedures.
• Prepare, organize, and check instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgeries.
• Pass instruments to the surgeon and assist with draping and attire.
• Maintain instrument counts with circulating nurse and sterilize instruments afterward.
• Support OR staff and prepare dressings and post-operative care as needed.
• Assist with orientation of new staff and participate in unit goals.

Summary

The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role as a key member of the surgical team, serving as the primary scrub technologist during procedures. This individual is responsible for preparing, organizing, and managing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment to ensure efficient and safe operations. The Surgical Technologist maintains strict adherence to sterile techniques and demonstrates continuous attention to preserving the integrity of the sterile field throughout each procedure.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a minimum of 15 Continuing Medical Education hours annually.
• Prepare and check instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.
• Set up and maintain a sterile field, following strict aseptic techniques.
• Assist with patient draping and ensure the surgical team is properly attired.
• Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
• Perform accurate sponge and sharp counts with the circulating nurse.
• Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization.
• Support specialty surgical services and stock OR rooms as needed.
• Prepare sterile dressings and assist with post-operative care.
• Help orient new staff and contribute to unit goals and objectives.
• May handle medications, sharps, and syringes on the sterile field.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

• Completed a military surgical technology program
• Graduated from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 12 months of graduation.
• Graduated from an accredited school of practical nursing.
• Qualify under the "Grandfathering Clause" by providing proof of at least one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between December 31, 2010, and December 31, 2014.
• Qualify under the "Hard-to-Fill Clause" by graduating from an accredited program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 24 months of hire.

New Graduates

• Official transcript from accredited school or letter emailed directly from the school’s registrar’s office confirming program completion will be accepted upon graduation.
• Primary source education verification required within 90 days of start date.

Required Licensure/Certification Skills

• Certified Surgical Technologist certification through a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization and degree from an accredited program in Surgical Technology required--OR-
• * Surgical Technologist Certification is not required for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) with current licensure in the State of New York.

Physical Requirements

Heavy - Clinical - Heavy clinical roles require continual lifting of more than 50 lbs., pushing and pulling patients or equipment, and working in physically awkward or restrictive positions. Staff must maintain balance and coordination in confined, uneven, or emergent care settings while performing both fine and gross motor tasks. High sensory acuity is needed to recognize patient cues and environmental alerts. Emotional and cognitive demands are significant due to urgent decision-making, managing distressed patients, and functioning effectively in high-pressure clinical situations. Environmental exposures commonly include infectious agents, biohazards, noise, and chemicals. Employees may be required to complete mask-fit testing, TB screening, and participate in extended or on-call shifts.

Pay Range

$23.21 - $33.18

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
