Job summary

Rochester Regional Health in Unity Hospital, Rochester, NY is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join the Operating Room team. The successful candidate will serve as the primary scrub technologist, preparing, organizing, and maintaining instruments, supplies and equipment and ensuring a sterile field for procedures.

Responsibilities include assisting with draping, passing instruments, counts, instrument sterilization prep, and supporting OR rooms.

Qualifications

• Must graduate from an accredited Surgical Technology program and obtain certification within 12 months.
• Alternative qualification: graduate from an accredited school of practical nursing.

Responsibilities

• Maintain sterile technique and preserve sterile field during procedures.
• Prepare, check and arrange instruments, supplies and equipment for surgeries.
• Set up sterile field and assist with patient draping.
• Pass instruments to the surgeon and assist as needed during operations.
• Perform sponge and sharp counts with the circulating nurse.
• Assist with instrument cleaning and sterilization after procedures.
• Support OR rooms and stock supplies as required.
• Assist with postoperative care and orient new staff.

Education

Summary

The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role as a key member of the surgical team, serving as the primary scrub technologist during procedures. This individual is responsible for preparing, organizing, and managing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment to ensure efficient and safe operations. The Surgical Technologist maintains strict adherence to sterile techniques and demonstrates continuous attention to preserving the integrity of the sterile field throughout each procedure.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain a minimum of 15 Continuing Medical Education hours annually.
• Prepare and check instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.
• Set up and maintain a sterile field, following strict aseptic techniques.
• Assist with patient draping and ensure the surgical team is properly attired.
• Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
• Perform accurate sponge and sharp counts with the circulating nurse.
• Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization.
• Support specialty surgical services and stock OR rooms as needed.
• Prepare sterile dressings and assist with post-operative care.
• Help orient new staff and contribute to unit goals and objectives.
• May handle medications, sharps, and syringes on the sterile field.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

• Graduated from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 12 months of graduation.
• Graduated from an accredited school of practical nursing.
• Qualify under the "Grandfathering Clause" by providing proof of at least one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between December 31, 2010, and December 31, 2014.
• Qualify under the "Hard-to-Fill Clause" by graduating from an accredited program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 24 months of hire.

New Graduates

• Official transcript from accredited school or letter emailed directly from the school’s registrar’s office confirming program completion will be accepted upon graduation.
• Primary source education verification required within 90 days of start date.

Physical Requirements

M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
