Job summary

Rochester Regional Health in Rochester, NY is seeking a Surgical Technologist III to join the UH Operating Room. This full-time role features 40 hours per week, with a 10-hour shift schedule, Monday through Friday, day and evening shifts, and no more than 3x on-call per month.

As the lead scrub, you will mentor teammates, ensure sterile technique, and support surgeons across ortho, neuro, and cardiovascular specialties with a focus on patient safety and education.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program
  • Graduate from a military Surgical Technology program
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Practical Nursing with NYS current LPN licensure and national certification within 12 months
  • Certified Surgical Technologist certification through NBSTSA and degree in Surgical Technology required
  • Grandfathering Clause - at least one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between 12/31/2010 - 12/31/2014
  • Hard-to-Fill Clause - must graduate from an accredited program and obtain nationally accredited certification within 24 months of hire

  • Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field, including setup of instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques.
  • Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, managing surgical counts, and preparing dressings, with expertise across multiple specialties (e.g., ortho, neuro, cardiovascular).
  • Apply advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and surgical protocols, including emergency procedures.
  • Mentor and precept new surgical technologists, conduct competency assessments, and deliver continuing education sessions.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives, maintain CME requirements, and contribute to unit goals, committee work, and specialty service support.

Job description

SUMMARY

The role assists the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. Maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field. Demonstrates high-level critical thinking and problem solving skills to support surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to ensure that surgeries run smoothly and safely. The Surgical Technologist, Lead is an advanced practitioner who serves as a mentor and role model for other technologists and consistently performs the preceptor role in training new colleagues.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program
  • Graduate from a military Surgical Technology program
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Practical Nursing with NYS current LPN licensure (must obtain nationally accredited certification within 12 months).
  • Certified Surgical Technologist certification through National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTS) and degree in Surgical Technology required
  • If you do not meet one of the above education requirements, you may qualify under one of the following provisions:
  • Grandfathering Clause - At least one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between 12/31/2010 - 12/31/2014.
  • Hard-to-Fill Clause - Must graduate from an accredited program and obtain nationally accredited certification within 24 months of hire
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy - Clinical - Heavy clinical roles require continual lifting of more than 50 lbs., pushing and pulling patients or equipment, and working in physically awkward or restrictive positions. Staff must maintain balance and coordination in confined, uneven, or emergent care settings while performing both fine and gross motor tasks. High sensory acuity is needed to recognize patient cues and environmental alerts. Emotional and cognitive demands are significant due to urgent decision-making, managing distressed patients, and functioning effectively in high-pressure clinical situations. Environmental exposures commonly include infectious agents, biohazards, noise, and chemicals. Employees may be required to complete mask-fit testing, TB screening, and participate in extended or on-call shifts. For disease specific care programs refer to the program specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements. Any physical requirements reported by a prospective employee and/or employee's physician or delegate will be considered for accommodations.
