Job description

Position Summary: In any patient care setting, the Surgical Technologist (ESS Short Term) assists the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. The Surgical Tech maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field. By working on assignments and/or floating through Rochester Regional Health facilities, you provide care where it’s needed most.

Key Responsibilities
  • Must maintain at least 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) per year.
  • Checks supplies, instrumentation, and equipment needed for surgical procedures and ensures proper operation.
  • Opens sterile supplies and sets up the table for surgical procedures.
  • Provides a sterile field for surgical procedures, ensuring that the members of the surgical team are properly attired and assists the surgeon with draping the patient to isolate the operative site.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques and informing the surgeon/surgical team of infractions.
  • Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon.
  • Counts sponges and sharps with the RN prior to the surgery and before the incision is closed.
  • Cleans and prepares the instruments for sterilization.
  • Assists in the maintenance of specialty surgical services.
  • Prepares the sterile dressing for the patient’s incision.
  • Orients medical/nursing students and technicians to the unit.
  • Assists in the development of unit goals and objectives.
  • Stocks rooms, may handle meds, sharps and syringes on the OR field.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 1.5 years as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Completed a military surgical technology program.
  • Grand-Fathering Clause: Provides evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year between 12/31/2010 and 12/31/2014.
  • Graduated from a Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredited program with a Surgical Technology major and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization within 12 months of graduation.
  • Hard to Fill Clause: May employ or contract a person who does not meet all qualifications if an adequate number of qualified surgical technologists cannot be employed or contracted.
  • Graduate from an accredited school of practical nursing.
Required Licensure/Certification Skills
  • Completed a military surgical technology program.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist certification through a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization and degree from an accredited program in Surgical Technology.
  • Grand-Fathering Clause: Provide evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year between 12/31/2010 and 12/31/2014.
  • Hard to Fill Clause: Certified Surgical Technologist certification required within 24 months after employment and degree from an accredited program required.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification is not required for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) with current licensure in the State of New York.
Physical Requirements

M - Medium Work. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; requires frequent walking, standing, or squatting. For disease‑specific care programs refer to the program‑specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements. Pay Range: City: Rochester, Postal Code: 14617. The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full‑time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components.
