Job summary

Memorial Hermann Surgical Hospital Kingwood in Houston, TX seeks a Scrub Technician to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and establish a sterile field during procedures in the operating room.

You will support the circulating nurse, handle instrument counts, gown and glove the team, maintain privacy, and participate in safety and environmental controls, HIPAA compliance, and ongoing training.

Qualifications

• Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma / GED; completion of a Scrub Technician Program.
• Certification preferable.
• Two years experience as a Scrub Tech in multiple specialties or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• General familiarity with medical terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures for an operating room.
• Reasoning Ability: Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

Responsibilities

• Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures.
• Assists circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining sterile environment.
• Assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment; performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts pre-operatively and intra-operatively.
• Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants.
• Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated.
• Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.
• Transports all surgical equipment and assists in cleaning/reprocessing instrument sets.
• Interacts appropriately with patients/others regardless of age or background.
• Follows Universal Precautions, hygiene, PPE, and safety practices for personal and patient safety.
• Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and emergency drills.
• Follows equipment and safety guidelines and maintains equipment care knowledge.
• Serves as a resource to health care team members.
• Attends inservices and meetings as required.
• Communicates effectively with visitors, physicians, patients, and staff; maintains privacy and confidentiality per policy.
• Maintains designated CPR certifications as offered.
• Acts in line with Center vision, mission, and business philosophy.
• Complies with Policies and Procedures and safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.
