• Reviews history, physical, and preoperative tests to establish a physiologic baseline.
• Maintains patient safety standards as the patient, equipment, and environment are prepared.
• Acts as first assistant to the primary surgeon during operative procedures within scope of practice.

Responsibilities

• Functions as first assistant to the surgeon during operative procedures and perioperative continuum.
• Maintains sterile field and protects patient from infection.
• Assists with tissue handling, dissection, and suturing according to surgeon preference.
• Verifies operative procedure, site, and laterality; participates in Universal Protocol.
• Assists with positioning and transfer of the patient.
• Monitors patient status and responds to intraoperative changes.
• Ensures safe use of instruments and suctioning to optimize visualization.
