Job summary

UC San Diego Health is seeking an Access Manager for Surgical Oncology to lead and optimize patient scheduling across breast health services. You will supervise staff, coach the team, and drive accountable workflows while partnering with Oncology Access and Surgery Leadership on access initiatives.

Qualifications

• Nine years of related experience, education/training, or a Bachelor's degree plus five years related experience/training, including two years in healthcare operations.
• Strong supervisory and organizational skills to supervise staff and manage complex workflows.
• Effective interpersonal, time management, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with scheduling applications and computer systems.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily access operations for Surgical Oncology, ensuring efficient scheduling of new patient consults, clinic visits, and surgical cases.
• Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management to access and scheduling staff.
• Partner with the call center leader to ensure continuous communication regarding operational impact on call center workflow.
• Proactively manage key access metrics (third-next-available, no-shows, room utilization, appointment utilization) and suggest improvements.
• Ensure appropriate utilization of appointment slots and manage overbooks to minimize patient impact.
• Plan, assign, onboard, orient, and train new team members; address performance issues.
• Implement and reinforce standardized workflows, protocols, and service expectations.
• Serve as a resource for outpatient scheduling requirements and procedures.
• Collaborate with physicians and clinical teams to improve patient access pathways.
• Conduct operational and financial analysis to support process improvements and justify changes.
• Maintain a compassionate team culture prioritizing patient-centered service and operational excellence.
