Job summary

AdventHealth in Daytona Beach, FL is seeking a Surgical First Assistant to support operating room teams. You will prepare suites, select instruments, assist with hemostasis, wound care, and patient positioning while maintaining strict asepsis and patient safety.

The role requires strong collaboration with surgeons, adherence to regulatory standards, and effective communication with team members. Active BLS and NBSTSA certifications are preferred.

Qualifications

• Ability to prepare surgical suites with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards.
• Knowledge of instruments, supplies, and equipment utilized for surgical procedures.
• Understanding of the procedures being performed and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
• Strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and teamwork mentality.
• Up-to-date knowledge of patient rights and ability to respect cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values.
• Regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards awareness.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare staff.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes physician preference cards to set up operating suites and updates cards as instructed.
• Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies based on physician preferences.
• Assists with body plane closures, wound dressings, and drainage systems.
• Provides visualization for operative sites through tissue manipulation, retraction, suction, and irrigation.
• Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures, anticipating needs of the surgeon.
• Assists with positioning patients, ensuring comfort and safety.
• Maintains aseptic technique and monitors team for breaks in technique.
• Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator as needed.
• Participates in time-out verifications and addresses discrepancies.
• Picks and passes medications and hemostatic agents during procedures.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization and transport.
