Job summary

Harrison Memorial Hospital in Kentucky is seeking a Surgical First Assistant (SFA) to support the surgeon before, during, and after procedures, ensuring safety and asepsis. The role is full-time, dayshift, with a focus on team-based patient care.

Qualifications include graduation from an accredited SFA or RN/tech program with first assistant training, OR experience preferred, and current CSFA/CFA/RNFA, plus BLS; ACLS and PALS are required. Collaborative and patient-centered care is emphasized.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical First Assistant program or accredited Surgical Technology/Registered Nurse program with recognized first assistant training.
• Operating room experience preferred.
• Current CSFA, CFA, or RNFA (as applicable).
• Current BLS. ACLS and PALS.
• Knowledge of surgical anatomy, instrumentation, and aseptic technique.

Responsibilities

• Provide exposure of the operative site through appropriate use of retractors and tissue handling.
• Achieve hemostasis using approved techniques including electrocautery, clamping, tying, and topical hemostatic agents.
• Handle tissues using atraumatic techniques.
• Assist with wound closure, including suturing, stapling, and application of dressings as authorized.
• Assist with placement and securing of drains and wound management devices.
• Operate surgical equipment safely.
• Anticipate surgeon needs and maintain an organized sterile field.
• Participate in sponge, sharps, and instrument counts.
• Maintain sterile technique throughout the procedure.
• Communicate effectively with the surgical team.
