Job summary

Ascension is seeking a Surgical Assistant for the Columbia St Mary's Milwaukee OR to support the Surgery department with a rotating schedule. You will help position patients, assist with exposure and tissue handling, and ensure safe operation room setup and cleanup.

Ideal candidates hold a BLS, NBSTSA credential is a plus, and have either a HS diploma with experience, an associate/technical degree, or equivalent cumulative job experience.

Qualifications

• BLS Provider within 30 days of hire date or transfer date is required.
• NBSTSA Surgical Assistant credentialed preferred.

Responsibilities

• Position the patient to provide best exposure for the procedure, using stabilizing equipment as needed.
• Provide visualization of the operative site through tissue manipulation, retraction, suction and irrigation.
• Assist with body plane closure, apply wound dressings and secure drainage systems.
• Assist in room cleanup and removal of soiled case cart, supplies and trash after the case.

How you’ll make an impact in this role

• Position the patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
• Provide visualization of the operative site using appropriate methods, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.
• Assist with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing of drainage systems.
• Assist in room clean up and the removal of the soiled case cart, supplies, and trash from OR room as needed at the completion of the surgical case.

Licensure/Certification/Registration

• BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
• Surgical Assistant credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred.

Education

• High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Technical degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.

Additional Preferences

• Certificate from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or
• Currently enrolled in a program where you will receive certificate in less than 1 year.
