Job summary

Ascension Health in Nashville, TN is seeking a part-time Surgical Assistant to support the Main OR on weekend nights. You will position patients, assist with tissue handling, hemostasis, wound closure, and room setup per surgeon's preference cards to ensure patient safety and efficient surgical flow.

The role requires completion of BLS, certification as a First Surgical Assistant, and at least a high school diploma or equivalent (or an Associate's/Technical degree or related experience).

Qualifications

  • BLS Provider certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Certified First Surgical Assistant credential required.
  • High School diploma or equivalent; or Associate's/Technical degree; or 4 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Position patient to optimize exposure for surgery and ensure comfort and safety.
  • Assist with visualization of the operative site, tissue handling, retraction, and suction/irrigation.
  • Achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis using appropriate techniques.
  • Assist with wound closure, dressings, drainage, and room cleanup after cases.
  • Prepare surgical suite and equipment per surgeon's preference cards.

How you’ll make an impact in this role
  • This position requires 24 hours per week and includes guaranteed hours.

  • Position patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety. Provide visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.

  • Utilize appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.

  • Assist with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing of drainage systems. Assist in room clean up and the removal of the soiled case cart, supplies, and trash from OR room as needed at the completion of the surgical case.

  • Participate as a surgical team member in the preparation of the surgical suite according to surgeon's preference cards with appropriate instruments, resources and supplies.

What minimum requirements you’ll need
Licensure / Certification / Registration
  • BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date provided. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.

  • Certified First Surgical Assistant obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required.Hired/transferred before 5/30/21 not required to hold certification. Accepted: National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting; American Board of Surgical Assistants; or National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants.

Education
  • High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Technical degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.
