Job summary

Memorial Health System seeks a qualified Surgical Assistant to support the surgeon in exposure, hemostasis, and various operative steps, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes. Responsibilities include chart review, allergy checks, patient positioning, and sterile technique in a fast-paced OR.

The role requires Surgical Technologist certification with at least 3 years of experience and certification as Surgical Assistant or Surgical First Assistant, plus BLS.

Qualifications

• Certification as a Surgical Technologist with minimum 3 years experience; certification as either Surgical Assistant or Surgical First Assistant from a Surgical Assistant Program required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required – obtain during hospital orientation.
• Maintains compliance in RQI as required.
• Ability to anticipate problems and problem solve in the OR.

Responsibilities

• Assist in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions during surgery.
• Review patient chart and verify allergies; prep solutions adjusted accordingly.
• Assist in patient positioning and urinary catheter placement as needed.
• Prepare prep tray sterilely and assist in draping according to surgeon guidelines.
• Assist in retracting tissues and in placement and suturing of surgical drains.
• Close wound layers under the surgeon's direction and support the OR team for a safe procedure.
