Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision of a Supervisor/Manager/Coordinator, the scheduler is responsible for performing revenue cycle tasks necessary to ensure compliance, patient safety, and excellent customer service. Key tasks include:

  1. Scheduling correct procedure/surgery appointments based on verbal requests or written orders, with knowledge of medical terms and human anatomy preferred.
  2. Demonstrating knowledge of Mercy system and services offered.
  3. Validating patient demographic and insurance information.
  4. Screening for medical necessity to ensure Medicare compliance.
  5. Documenting necessary precertification/authorization for services.
  6. Verifying and accurately documenting patient eligibility and benefits.
  7. Calculating and collecting patient liabilities and providing exceptional customer service.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Associates degree in health-related field and at least 3 years of experience in a physician practice, urgent care, or similar setting, or equivalent practice experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
  • Ability to identify operational issues and escalate them appropriately.
  • Problem-solving skills and experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy, including practice management software; experience with electronic medical records software (preferably EPIC) is desirable.
  • Understanding of revenue cycle processes and performance measures.
  • Analytical and organizational skills to prioritize activities and adapt to changing situations.
  • Experience with CPT and ICD-9 coding, with working knowledge of ICD-10 terminology.
  • High commitment to customer service, team player attitude, leadership potential.
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic, proactive, and receptive to delegation.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal office environment with flexible scheduling to meet project deadlines and workload demands.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Scheduling surgeries/procedures at appropriate facilities, coordinating with personnel to meet surgeon schedules and protocols.
  • Obtaining and validating patient demographic, insurance, and clinical information.
  • Following policies and procedures related to scheduling and precertification.
  • Performing patient registration duties, including data entry and maintaining confidential records.
  • Rescheduling appointments as needed, and documenting pre-certification information.
  • Demonstrating problem-solving skills related to scheduling, financial clearance, and patient liabilities.
  • Collaborating effectively with internal and external staff, reporting issues, and participating in educational activities.
  • Upholding Mission and Core Values, adhering to policies, and promoting safety and excellent customer service.
  • Monitoring provider schedules and tracking referrals.
