Job summary

The Ohio State University is seeking a Surface Maintenance Tech 1 to perform semi-skilled road and grounds maintenance on campus, using a range of equipment and tools.

Under general supervision, the role includes snow removal, loading/unloading, and potential overtime; successful background check required. Regular shift is First Shift with 40 hours weekly; CDL and drug test prerequisites.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 100 hours of training in operation of medium and light equipment.
• 100 hours experience in concrete set-up and finishing.
• Valid driver’s license; CDL Class A with tanker endorsement within 150 days of start.
• Must pass federally required pre‑employment drug test.

Responsibilities

• Perform semi-skilled work on roads, walks and drainage systems/grounds.
• Use a wide variety of medium and light equipment to maintain/repair campus roads and grounds.
• Load and unload materials from trucks; use small hand and power tools.
• Assist in snow removal; perform road maintenance activities.
• Work primarily first shift; may have overtime or shift changes; subject to 24 hour emergency calls.

CDL Class A with tanker endorsement

Detailed Job Description:

Under general supervision from maintenance supervisor, performs semi-skilled work on roads, walks and drainage systems/grounds. Uses a wide variety of medium and light motorized equipment to maintain repair and clean campus-area roads and grounds; loads and unloads materials from trucks; uses small hand and power tools; assists in snow removal; performs road maintenance activities. Performs other duties as assigned; works primarily first shift within Facilities Operations and Development Landscape Services, but is subject to changes in shift, hours, days, and/or location as operations dictate; may work overtime; subject to 24 hour emergency call in. Will require successful completion of a criminal background check.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience; 100 hours of training in operation of medium and light equipment; 100 hours experience in concrete set-up and finishing; valid driver’s license upon employment and Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement obtained within the first 150 days of the probationary period; must pass federally required pre‑employment drug test.

Desired Qualification:

Experience with The Ohio State University’s facilities, systems, policies, and procedures.

Additional Information:

The target hiring range for this job profile is$16.90-$23.24 per hour. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
